Most coverage of Meta's legal exposure treats it as a compliance story: a number, a settlement, a quarter it lands in. This teardown asks a different question — what happens to the product if the legal position forces a change to the mechanism underneath it?
The mechanism, not the fine
The social model rests on a specific arrangement: behaviour observed at scale, used to rank a feed, and priced against an ad sold on the strength of that ranking. Those are three separate legal surfaces — collection, inference, and targeting — and they are not equally exposed.
The teardown separates them deliberately, because a ruling that touches one is survivable and a ruling that touches all three is a different event entirely. Coverage that reports a single headline number cannot tell you which one is happening.
What repricing would actually look like
- Collection constrained. The input narrows, and ranking and targeting degrade together — the same shock hitting the model twice.
- Inference constrained. The behaviour is still observable, but deriving what it is worth is not. The data stays; the product built on it does not.
- Targeting constrained. The inventory still exists and still sells, but for less per impression. The slowest and most survivable of the three.
- Nothing constrained, slowly. The cost is the years of unresolved exposure, not the ruling. This is the case the market prices worst.
Why we published it
Reading a market before it reprices is the whole discipline, and the reads worth publishing are the ones that are falsifiable. This one is: it names which surface has to move, and what should be observable if it does.
The market has priced the fine. It has not yet priced the mechanism.
If the read is wrong, it will be wrong in a specific and checkable way — which is the only kind of research worth putting a name on.
